Many people assume that the Mausoleum of Genghis Khan is the final resting place of a great emperor. In truth, what lies here is the undying soul of an entire nation. This is not the actual burial site of Genghis Khan. In 1227, he died during a campaign against the Western Xia. The Mongols practiced "secret burial," and his true resting place remains a mystery to this day.

This site is a "cenotaph" — a memorial housing his spirit and personal belongings. Its predecessor was the "Eight White Yurts," eight movable white felt tents venerated by all Mongol people. According to legend, Genghis Khan once passed through Ordos and praised it as a blessed land. When his funeral procession reached this very spot, the wheels of his coffin cart sank into the marsh. Remembering his words, his followers left his clothing, bow, and other relics here on the grassland, and built the mausoleum in his honor.

The stage performances — The Ordos Wedding and Daily Naadam — are highly praised. Visitors say the stage design, lighting, professionalism, and audiovisual effects are all outstanding. On sunny days, the blue sky and white clouds perfectly frame the Mongolian-style architecture, making every snapshot look like a postcard.

Quick Tips

The mausoleum is not in the city center. It's about 50 kilometers from downtown Ordos, so plan a full day for the visit. Peak-season tickets cost 120 RMB — it's more cost-effective to buy the "Ordos Tourism Pass" (100 RMB/year) in advance on the "Yunyou Ordos" mini-program. The site is large, so if you're not up for lots of walking, buy a shuttle bus ticket. If you want to catch a performance, be sure to get a ticket that includes The Ordos Wedding — it's highly recommended.
